Movie Review: My Best Friend’s Dead (2023)

My Best Friend’s Dead is…

You know what? I’m gonna go with “quirky.” It’s as good a word as any!

Huh. That’s actually the word they use to describe me. Makes me think there should be some kind of Wondra Scale for quirkiness!

The movie starts inside a police station (obligatory oink oink,) then uses flashback to fill in the blanks. Not original, I guess, but a useful tool all the same.

Anywho…

Main character Olivia (Caitlin Duffy) narrates our journey through the bizarre events that land her in the hot seat with the kind of fuck-my-life acceptance Millennials (like yours truly) honed before we graduated high school.

And, honestly, that annoyed exasperation is kind of endearing. (You can decide if I’m referring to Olivia or Millennials at large.)

Like the good friend she is, (ignoring the part where she let her bestie snuff it, of course,) Olivia keeps her promise to resurrect Aurora (Anna Shields) after her death using dark magick they (cringe) bought online.

Advice for baby witches from an old hag?

Make your own damned dark magick. Don’t cut corners with that shit.

(Or at least buy local. Lol. Every village has at least one witch willing to do what needs to be done – for the right price. More than one if you happen to be in ours! Hah.)

As you might expect, things don’t go exactly to plan.

Alive, Aurora is a lot.

She’s the friend who pushes you to have “just one more” drink when you’re already on tilt before handing you the phone to send those texts you swore you wouldn’t. (Psst… if you’re thinking you don’t have that friend, you might just be that friend.)

cough, cough

Dead, Aurora is a fucking demon.

My Best Friend’s Dead is easy, tongue-in-cheek horror perfect for a wide range of viewers. I mean… once you get past the undead, exploding, cannibal demons and all, it’s really just a movie about friendship.

(Isn’t that just life?)

The movie comes complete with Catharine Daddario as tries-too-hard Amanda and a “Wait. Did she…?” ending – both of which I loved. Is the demonic makeup more than a little cheesy? Deliciously so.

And I love that too.

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5 stars)
